Advocate: Someone who pleads another’s cause, who helps another by defending or comforting him.
Scripture tells us that this what Christ currently does for us before the throne of God. As a matter of fact, it is His only purpose in Heaven at this time,
“He lives to make intercession for them”
(Hebrews 7:25)
He intercedes for we, who believe in Him. We, who trust in the sufficiency of His blood and are grieved when we sin. Not those who have made sin a pattern and delight but those who truly grieve and seek true repentance when they do sin.
“But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous”
(1 John 2:1)
His eternal status as High Priest is confirmed because of His personal blood that was shed on Calvary.
He doesn’t sit on a high horse condemning us when we sin. He sympathises with us. He knows what temptation means even though He never fell into it but He recognises our weakness (Hebrews 4:15).
As we bask in this assurance, a plot twist comes:
The One who stands before God’s throne on our behalf now sits in His own throne facing us. Our Advocate becomes Arbiter.
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him…”
Matthew 25:31-32
Before any judgement begins, as a God of order, He separates all before Him into two groups:
the righteous & the wicked
saved saints & and lost sinners
the pure grain & and the chaff
the wheat & the tares
the sheep & and the goats.
Then He begins to examine us according to every thought, desire, motive, and action we had on earth before an eternal sentence of life or death is passed.
Oh what a glorious, vindicating day for some and alas! what terrible, surprising day for others.
“And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me’”
(Luke 19:27)
“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment”
(Hebrews 9:27)
“He will appear a second time, apart from sin, to those eagerly awaiting Him for salvation”
(Hebrews 9:28)
“Think on these things!” & “Choose this day Whom you will serve.”
